Songs of Joy

Isaiah 30:29 (NLT)
But the people of God will sing a song of joy, like the songs at the holy festivals. You will be filled with joy, as when a flutist leads a group of pilgrims to Jerusalem—the mountain of the LORD—to the Rock of Israel.”

This verse is so beautiful! It perfectly illustrates one of the lessons the Lord has been teaching me lately: the power of songs.

A quick experience I would love to share:
A few months ago, I was watching a podcast hosted by a gospel commentator. During the program, the host introduced a song. It was a secular song that sounded nice to the ear, so I decided to check it out and download it.

The song was a sad one, written and sung by an artist following a breakup. Before that moment, I had been enjoying a season of intense joy in the Holy Ghost, having spent time studying the book of Psalms.

However, I began listening to the song repeatedly, and gradually, my thoughts shifted. I found myself reflecting on certain things, and before I knew it, my heart had become sorrowful and heavy. This feeling lingered for weeks. It was as though my joy had suddenly disappeared.

I struggled to understand what was happening and couldn't quite put my finger on the cause until the Holy Spirit brought it to my attention.

Songs are powerful, and they carry spiritual influence. They can lift your spirit or weigh it down. They can stir up joy, strengthen your faith, and draw your heart towards God; conversely, they can awaken sorrowful thoughts and emotions.

In our anchor Scripture, we see that the people would sing songs of joy, and their hearts would be filled with joy. This reveals a profound truth: sometimes, singing is not merely an expression of joy; it is also a pathway into joy.

You do not have to wait until you feel joyful before you sing songs of joy. Rather, you can sing and listen to songs that minister joy to your heart, allowing yourself to be ushered into the realm of exceeding joy in Christ; a joy that is not defined by circumstances or situations.

Therefore, be intentional about the songs you listen to. Pay attention to what they stir up in your heart and the direction in which they lead your thoughts.

Sometimes, the song you repeatedly listen to may be influencing the state of your heart more than you realise.

Choose songs that exalt Christ, strengthen your faith, and remind you of the realities of your life in Him.

After all, the joy of the Lord is not merely something we express when everything is going well; it is also a reality we can continually draw from as we set our hearts on Him.
